Fighting Butterflies

In many male stomachs,
butterflies can be heard fighting intensively
for territory.

What determines who wins
is something that has long eluded researchers.

New research suggests
that the victor is the most
highly-motivated of the combatants.

After an absolutely lovely coffee date
(I don't think it was a date,
but let's call it a "date" for poetic purposes),
I find myself back at work,
fighting butterflies in my belly,
with all bets on the heavy heartbreak,
but don't underestimate the underdog
happily-ever-after one.

All the afternoon butterflies
are battling for the same daisy
who texts me something funny,
something shopping-center-emo,
but beautiful and not provoked,
so this is on her, but little does she know
she is just shaking the butterfly cage in my bell.

I worried they might tear their wings to tatters
and so, upon them both, I softly blew
and, forgetting their quarrel, off they flew
to inspire another crush on a cold day
with a combination of nostalgia
and good conversations about books.
