because I always wanted
to be a musician,
but I never learned
to play and I can't sing.
Growing up poor,
guitar lessons
were out the door,
and don't get me
started on the piano.
Being creative came to me
without much help
from my family
or worldly circumstance,
but it still forced its way out in words.
I remember devouring
the insert booklet of CDs,
reading the words of each chorus,
the lyrics standing out
more than the tune itself.
The funny phrasing
of certain songs
is what got me going
and opened my eyes
to the lack of rules life's river.
