under the southern sunset of the Louisiana sky,
I doubt if I will ever see you again.
jumped on a train
heading northbound.
dreamed of you
the whole way.
sat next to a Jesus Freak
who stole my whiskey.
got lost looking
for a bathroom.
found the sky one night
and never looked down.
ate garbage
and met a Mennonite.
arrived safely
stayed with Anna and her sister.
five days without a shower,
still worth the journey.
I am the freight,
carrying my heart in a duffle.
handwritten notes
and left them everywhere I went.
boy, I sure hope
we never make it to Boise.
heading to Big Sur after that
for a spectacular collision of land and ocean.
work may bring me to Brazil,
but poetry will definitely bring me back to New Amsterdam.
