Second City

The stars aligned for Chicago.
From comedy to poetry,
work to wandering and forgetting,
everything fell into place for this place.

And now I sit writing
in the back class at After-Words Books,
bothering Beverly the owner,
daydreaming and scheming.

To believe is to remain,
staying sane inside yourself,
knowing that your choices
led you to somewhere important.

I feel this today, September 2nd,
as I check my bank account,
see deposits, and get good news on the wire
about concerts and musicians.

The coffee is bad, but the vibes are good,
and that makes the coffee better,
as do the possibilities
of love and life.

After After-Words,
I meet my pal Adam and we go walking
and talking about the future,
how it happens every second.
