The Wound of Existence

Humans are never satisfied
With simply existing.
No other animal questions
Their purpose in life
Or how they fit into the universe.

Our primordial concerns
Consist of death, isolation,
Freedom and meaning,
Yet our hedonic adaptation
Turns happiness into voids.

For instance,
The only thing stopping me
Are genetics, lack of will,
Income, brain chemistry
And external events.

Happiness is a hunt
Without a capture.
We need to enjoy
The sharpening of spears
As well as the killing of years.
