Lauren and Jason and Me

skipped the Sunday part
of the poetry fest
and had a mellow skate day
with the birthday boy.

We met his lady
at Max Fish
for a dinner drink,
joining the rims of our pint glasses.

Lauren asked me
if I was seeing anyone,
and I laughed,
and then she asked if I was staying in New York.

I didn't answer,
not to be rude,
but I just didn't know;
every time I think it's for good, something else pulls me away.

Jason leaned over my shoulder
to see who I was texting.
"Who is Frances, some girl you met on the subway?"
Yes, a beautiful reader.

They left around midnight,
heading to their home in Queens.
I stayed for another round,
and Bumbled for a few pretty legs between which to sleep.
