Mule Dagger

fire lives on the prairie
wild in the heart of woman
breaking dreams
like air.

the roosters testify
to the sky every morning
and the reasons why
while pecking denim legs.

freedom will work our fingers
like the banjo and daily postcards
as the daily coyote
says good bye to town.

when we were kids
we'd play red red house
and now it is hot as hell
says the graveyard.

pistols on hips
and love on lips
while the wind blows
rumors of Kentucky secession.

freedom will work our fingers
like supper and knives
as the fireflies start
to say good bye to the nigh.
